HAPPY MONDAY: GOING GREEN
One of my main concerns when I started my natural hair journey what now feels like eons ago, especially being an attorney was how to style it so that it would be suitable for a professional environment. I held this misconception that natural hair could not look neat or professional enough. Well what a misconception that was. Increasingly at work, in meetings, in professional settings from courtrooms to boardrooms, I see more women rocking their natural hair in so many different styles and it makes me so giggly happy.
When I first started my journey, I was very conservative with what I did, mostly buns, anything to prevent whispers, stares or whatever it was I thought other people were thinking. As my colleagues became accustomed to what was happening on the top of my head (even though it's really what's on the inside that should matter), I got bolder and pushed the boundaries a little more. Remember - change is destabilizing to most. It has a lot less to do with the misconception that natural hair is crazy or wild and much more to do with the fact that people just aren't used to it.
All this to say, for the ladies who wonder what I wear to work or how I dress, this is me dressed for work. I did switch into more fun earrings for these pics. I also tend to add a blazer when needed and actually extra blazers, scarves and heels are neatly (ha!!) stashed all over my office. I must confess, besides meetings, (thank Goodness, no more court appearances for me in the near future) I dress more business casual for work than business formal.
And to the how to wear natural hair question, I always say, learn the culture first at your place of work. Keep it nice and neat but that doesn't mean you have to hide it all away. After all, it's what God gave ya.
