STAY: CURAÇAO- SCUBA LODGE, located in the Pietermaai District in Willemstad (capital ofCuraçao)
LOCATION: The Pietermaai district, unlike some of the other parts ofCuraçao where you would find the large major resorts, has a completely different feel from a tourist spot. Instead it has much more of a neighborhood feel. This is because it was originally a residential neighborhood and in some ways still is. After suffering a period in which drug dealers ruled the neighborhood, the area is experiencing a rebirth. So much in the form of art, culture, food and revamping of the old. Some of the very best architecture; Dutch colonial architecture is found on this part of the island. Pietermaai is also now best known for its historic cultural value on UNESCO’s ‘World heritage list’ and is one of the most popular neighborhoods on the island. Additionally, it’s close to the main downtown scene as well as right on the ocean.
ROOMS: A variety of room styles and sizes are available from single bedrooms to completely stocked up 2 bedroom suites. Of course, if you want the best, request a room facing the ocean and not the street.
PRICE: $ – Well priced for the island which is surprisingly quite expensive.
FOOD: We pretty much had breakfast at the hotel every morning which is something we don’t often do as we like to explore and try different things. However, breakfast was so tasty, great portions and you couldn’t beat eating right by the water. Breakfast is unfortunately not included in the room price- that was a bit of a bummer. I did still think it was worthwhile.
OVERALL: Great staff, location, clean. Minor demerits as some of the unit were showing a little wear, sometimes sand wasn’t completely cleaned out of the units (as you can imagine being by the beach, you drag in quite a bit of sand) and the outdoor furniture especially the cushions could do with a change.
