Golden Gabby

I had to say something about this because at a very bright and amazing time for one young woman, there's some extreme negativity that I just don't understand. In one corner we've got the amazingly talented 16yr old, 2 Time Olympic Gold Medal winning Gabby Douglas. In the other corner you have some individuals who have decided to use social media to voice their disapproval of Gabby's hair.

I know hair has become increasingly important to black women but I have to agree with Monique Fields that this is the OLYMPICS and not a beauty/hair contest.  In fact I believe the reason all the girls pull their hair back is because its the last thing on their minds and the best way to get it out the way. And even if it were a beauty competition, the unfortunate comments would imply that Gabby is a poor representation of black women and their hair. Seriously? She is ONLY the first African-American to ever win the all around Olympic gold medal.  Doesn't she have enough to worry about than to have her peers and those who should be supporting her, being so shallow and obnoxious.
I believe Gabby is a beautiful and smart teenager. I hope she doesn't let those comments get to her. It's a sad reality that some people use social media, blogs etc as a platform to spread their hate, ignorance and envy. But I'll keep putting out positive energy and wishing the best for Gabby.  Remembering that there's never a tougher time in a young lady's life than her teens and this teen has accomplished so much already and everyone needs to get out of her hair.
